Mr Yuck Adventuers in JPEG Land
The Mr Yuck Series
A while back I was making a video exploring the early Gamemaker scene, inparticular when 3D had just been implemented into the engine so people were making impressive, yet low quality 3D games.
One game I played during this video was Mr Yuck Gets on the CRAZY BUS. Truly an experience to remember.
Whilst digging up this master art to share with someone, I found that there was not simply one Mr Yuck game, there were eleven. A goldmine of amateur indie game trash.
Mr Yuck Adventuers in JPEG Land gained notoriety for it's vivid graphical style |
mR YUCK GOEZ T0 jpeg LAND!
I have been known to use JPEG compression and patended image crappification™ in my games before, so Mr Yuck Adventuers in JPEG Land struck a chord with me. I had to play it.
You play as the titular Mr Yuck, a stickman with a green head who has lost his crown. He's also wearing a crown throughout the entire game.
The famous blind maze level from Mr Yuck Adventuers in JPEG Land has gone down in history as one of the most creative puzzles in video gaming history |
My favourite feature of this game is the vivid backgrounds that wildly scroll across the screen, to give you that good retina searing feel.
One level inparticular subverts your expectations. There's a block maze, but little does Mr Yuck know, many of the blocks are fake blocks, so you must leave the bounds of the levels and come back in in order to blindly solve the maze. Truly peak game design.
"you'rl PAHY fur wat u did'ed tooo meh crown!"
We are left with the empty threat of the game's antagonist, Mr Doink. All we must do to defeat him is collect the sacred pngs and we winzza.
When you winnza |
Then the game abruptly closes.
